Meu primeiro contato com a fotografia foi em 1987, quando participei do intercâmbio cultural do AFS numa cidadezinha chamada Sister Bay, Wisconsin, EUA. Até então, a vida resumia-se numa criação protestante num bairro de periferia e nos dois anos do curso técnico de Mecânica. Aos 16 anos, a vida era dividida em bem e mal, certo e errado.
O que mais me impressionava nas aulas de fotografia era a possibilidade do erro. O erro não apenas era permitido, mas às vezes era o que dava certo. A máquina fotográfica também permitia, e de certo modo exigia, que o menino tímido se aproximasse das pessoas. Em 1987 me apaixonei pela fotografia, pelo erro e pelas pessoas.
De volta ao Brasil fui cursar Jornalismo. Em 1992, trabalhando 15 horas por dia numa agência de navegação e com o curso indo de mal a pior, fui para Nova Iorque “virar fotógrafo”. Durante os três anos e meio que vivi em Nova Iorque, estudei no ICP - International Center of Photography, fiz sanduíches e saladas para pagar o aluguel, descobri o MoMA, o jazz de Miles, Coltrane e companhia e perambulei pelas ruas para aprender a fotografar, olhar e ver.
Em 2000, depois de três anos morando no Rio de Janeiro, voltei para Vitória, aceitando um convite de Rogério Medeiros para trabalhar como fotojornalista na Revista Século, e outro de Humberto Capai para trabalhar na Usina de Imagem.
Em 2005, fui para Tóquio, onde morei um ano e pude dedicar-me integralmente à fotografia autoral, produzindo a série Toquiotas.
De volta ao Brasil em 2006, optei por estudar arte contemporânea. Entre 2008 e 2011 conclui a Licenciatura em Artes Visuais e em 2013 conclui o Mestrado em História, Teoria e Crítica de Arte, ambos pela Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo.

My first contact with photography was in 1987, when I went to Sister Bay, Wisconsin, USA, as an AFS exchange student to live with the Hitzemans. Until then, life was summed up in a Protestant up bringing in a blue-collar neighborhood and in the two years of the Technical High School studying Industrial Mechanics. At age of 16, life was divided into good and evil, right and wrong.
What impressed me the most in photography classes was the possibility of error. Through Mr. Robert Merline’s tutoring, error was not only permitted, but sometimes it was the only thing that worked. The camera also allowed, and somehow demanded, that the shy boy from Brazil would have to approach people. In 1987 I fell in love with photography, with error and with people.
Back to Brazil, I went into college to study Journalism. In 1992, working 15 hours a day in a shipping agency and with college going from bad to worse, I went to New York City "to become a photographer". During the three and a half years that I lived in NYC, I studied at ICP – International Center of Photography, did sandwiches and salads to pay rent, discovered MoMA, the jazz of Miles and Coltrane and wandered the streets to learn how to shoot , to look and see.
In 2000, after three years living in Rio de Janeiro, I returned to Vitoria, my hometown, accepting an invitation from Rogerio Medeiros to work as a photojournalist in Século Magazine, and also to join Humberto Capai to work in the photo agency Usina de Imagem.
In 2005, I went to Tokyo, where I lived for one year and could devote myself entirely to personal projects on photography, producing the series Tokyoites.
Back to Brazil in 2006, I decided to study contemporary art. Between 2008 and 2011 I concluded an Undergraduate degree on Visual Arts and in 2013 got my M.A. on Art History, Theory and Art Criticism, both from the Federal University of Espírito Santo.
